Modifying a baby
monitor receiver (into a computer line-in, input device).
First I took a stereo
1/8 inch to RCA cord, and cut-off the RCA plugs. The plug MUST
be a stereo plug as that is what your soundcard plug will require.
The cord has two insulated wire
(red and white) surrounded by strands of shielding wire.
I twisted the shielding wires
together and tinned them (a solder cover). then
after removing about 1/4" of insulation, I also twisted
and soldered both the red and white wires together. This
would not normally be correct but in this case we are taking a
mono receiver and feeding the audio into a stereo input jack.
On this unit it was easy to
tell which wires went where. But carefully use the test method below
before soldering if you not absolutely positive. Then once
assembled TEST AGAIN.
I used an old PC speaker with
the correct input jack. The sending unit was in another room
(with a TV on). Hearing the TV clearly, through
the old PC speaker) let me know all worked well.
Now watch the video to
see how to setup the monitor as a computer microphone.
